Parent Liaison

Since being opened by the parents of 12 children in 2001, ABACAS has remained a parent-centred school. We believe that parents should be involved in the educational goals of children with autism. Parents are provided with training in the principles and applications of Applied Behaviour Analysis and a full-time parent liaison programme gives the opportunity to ensure progress children make in school is generalised from to home and other settings. Parent liaison also aims to help parents to identify and address goals for home life such as independent daily living skills, sleeping problems and behaviour management increasing the independence and quality of life of the children and the entire family.

Staff qualifications

All ABA tutors in ABACAS are educated to a minimum of degree level, primarily in psychology or a related discipline such as education or child care. Many staff pursue further education in post-graduate studies to Masters or Doctorate level including Board Certification BCABA and BCBA, Teacher Training Higher Diploma, and training courses in the use of alternative communication systems such as PECS and Irish Sign Language (ISL/Lámh).

Training level

An on site comprehensive training system is also implemented for all staff which provide staff with training in the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis, Autism and associated deficits, and the curricula available for providing appropriate education to children with a diagnosis of autism. The deficits associated with the triad of impairments are a particular focus of this program and provide staff with a very broad knowledge base in educational best practice for children with a diagnosis of autism.
